Introduction:
This checklist documents the vascular plant species occurring in the Bosque Protector Maquipucuna and adjacent areas in Provincia Pichincha, Ecuador. The floristic area extends latitudinally from the Equator to 00°10'N and longitudinally from 78° 35' to 78° 41'W, covering an area of approximately 22,000 hectares, of which about 4,500 hectares occur within the Maquipucuna Reserve. Within the floristic area, elevations range from approximately 1000 m to 3150 m (the Reserve varies in elevation from c. 1100 to c. 2800 m, see note); the steep slopes are covered with primary and secondary montane rain forest and cloud forest. The total vascular flora so far recorded from the Maquipucuna area, based on approximately 5,000 collections, includes 157 families, 665 genera, and approximately 1,966 species, including 301 species of pteridophytes and over 340 species of orchids (see updated data). The number of exotic species (about 49) is very low. At least three endemic species, in the genera Ardisia, Ageratina and Clibadium, have been described; but additional species remain to be published. Nomenclature follows Webster & Rhode (2001) and Jørgensen & León-Yánez. (1999).

Enumeration of Taxa
This checklist is primarily based on the botanical collections made by Grady L. Webster and collaborators on the UREP expeditions, which have been deposited at the University of California, Davis (DAV), the Herbario Nacional (QCNE), and the Pontificia Universidad Católica (QCA); additional duplicates have been distributed to other herbaria (including AAU, MO, NY, TEX, UC, US). Additional collections made by other botanists who contributed sizable sets of specimens are cited with the collection number preceded by the appropriate letter: C (Carlos Cerón), D (Piero Delprete), F (Efrain Freire et al.), G (Alwyn Gentry et al.), H (Fred Hrusa), K (Dean Kelch), L (Bernt Lojtnant & Ulf Molau), M (Robbin Moran), N (David Neill), P (Walter Palacios), Q (Carlos Quelal), T (Galo Tipaz), V (Henk van der Werff), W (Kenneth A. Wilson), and Z (Zak Zahawi); other collectors are listed by surname. These specimens are mainly deposited at DAV, MO, and QCNE. An important collection of trees, shrubs, and epiphytes, made in the Loma Pahuamba area by Efrain Freire and collaborators, is housed at the Herbario Nacional (QCNE) in Quito. A number of other records are cited from the literature (especially treatments in the Flora of Ecuador) or from internet resources (mostly the W3TROPICOS database at the Missouri Botanical Garden). The total number of UREP collections is 3,625; together with the records of other collectors, the grand total of all collections made in the Maquipucuna area is over 5,200. Nomenclature
and delimitation of taxa mostly follow the Catalogue
of the Vascular Plants of Ecuador (Jørgensen & León-Yánez,
1999), which is referred to as CVPE in the text. Synonyms are cited mainly
in instances where the name adopted is not the same as in Jørgensen
and León-Yánez (1999). Names of native species are in italics,
introduced species are in underlined roman. Common names, indicated by quotation
marks, are mostly Spanish; they have been compiled from herbarium specimen
labels, personal contacts, and from floristic works on western Ecuador (Acosta-Solís,
1966; Cerón,
1993; Cerón & Ávila,
1994; Dodson & Gentry,
1978; Gentry
1993; and Rios, 1993).
About 50 species listed in square brackets are not numbered or counted in
statistical summaries; these are mostly species collected slightly outside
the boundaries of the floristic area (within 1' or 2'). See this note about comments. This checklist is
made available on the Internet via the University of California, Davis Herbarium

and will be periodically updated as exploration
of the Maquipucuna area progresses.
Unless otherwise indicated, localities are mainly within the
core area of Maquipucuna (from the headquarters at Hacienda El Carmen along
the main ridge of Cerro Sosa [Montañas de Maquipucuna]) to the peak
and slopes of Cerro Montecristi (see maps).
For each species, the habitat is given, often in abbreviated form (primary
forest: prim. for.; secondary forest: sec. for.; upper montane forest: upper
mont. for.; riparian forest: rip. for.). Range limits in meters represent
records from herbarium specimens and are generally rounded off to the nearest
25 or 50 m. Colors of inflorescences (inflors.), flowers (fls.), and fruits
(frs.) are given based on specimens and personal observations. Plants not
indicated as epiphytes (ep.) are assumed to be terrestrial (terr.). The total
number of genera found in each family is indicated in parentheses after the
family name. Species not reported from Provincia Pichincha in Jørgensen
and León-Yánez (1999) are indicated by having their species
number in bold type. Determinations of specimens collected by
G. L. Webster and other UREP personnel that were not identified by specialists
(marked by one or more asterisks) were made by G. L. Webster and UREP collaborators
(especially Dean Kelch, Montserrat Rios, Brian Smith, and Kenneth A. Wilson).
Many collections remain unidentified to genus or to family; these have not
been cited.
